Biographical Notes:
Bart Teatum was born in San Jacinto Texas in 1847. He was the eldest of two sons and his father a mildly successful local rancher. When Bart was 13 he ran away from home to serve with the Confederate Army as a drummer boy. He saw little action until 1863 when he served with General H. H. Sibbley in the capture of Santa Fe. Moving into Arizona the Texans won the battle of Glorieta Pass but had their supply train destroyed by Union raiders and were forced to fall back to Texas. Bart spent the rest of the war defending settlers against Apache and Comanche raids.
After the War Bart became an officer in the Army Scouts. When he was 22 he
discovered there was a great deal of money to be made in the Texas Panhandle
hunting buffaloes for the railroad work crews. In 1872 Bart was at the Battle
of Adobe Walls where Quanna Parker nearly overran the settlement. Bart insists
he was the one that shot Parker’s horse out from under him.
In 1875 Bart’s brother was killed by a ranch hand from a local cattle baron’s spread. Bart returned home and got involved in the range war brewing. He became a regulator and managed to find and shoot the man responsible for killing his brother. He also made a reputation for himself as ‘Buffalo Bart’. He actually hates the nickname, but after that Ned Buntline novel came out, it stuck.
Last year Bart managed to catch the cattle baron who ‘ordered’ his brother’s shooting in a cow town and gunned him and two of his bodyguards down. There was some question of whether it was self defense as Bart claimed, largely because the cattle baron was a friend of the governor. Bart had to get out of Texas fast and a local inventor was ready to test fly his ether flyer. A few months later Bart was on Mars.
Bart is the stereotypical Texan in many ways. He is given to tall tales, exaggeration and outright lies. All of this is in good fun of course. While he is a genial sort, he can also turn mean without skipping a beat. In addition his years of living on the frontier have made him a tad suspicious of strangers. Bart is a loyal friend once he is won over and a ‘game fella’ in a fight. He realizes that he is getting older and slowing down. Now he is attempting to make his fortune before time slows his guns too much.
